Why I joined a Masters swimming team

Why join Masters Swimming?

There are many benefits to regular fitness - increased fitness, weight loss, and reduced stress. Some folks enjoy going to the gym or running, but for me there is nothing better than swimming for exercise.

For many people, going to a "lap swim" at a local pool is sufficient. For me and others that have swam competitively before, that doesn't work. Swimming straight lap after lap is boring and I quit before I've gotten a really good workout.

So what is the solution? Joining a Masters Swimming team.

Benefits of Masters Swimming

Here are some of the many benefits of joining a Masters Swimming Team:

  1. Coached Workouts - the team I belong to has outstanding coaches that have coached Olympians previously.  They stay current on stroke technique and training methods and give great pointers and tips.
  2. Workout Variety - the two coaches alternate and they each have a different style.  Each workout is different and there are new drills and sets everyday.  I never get bored!
  3. Friendship and comradery with other members of the team.
  4. Motivation to make early workout because other team members are going - being a part of a team motivates me to get out of bed and to the 5:45-7:00AM workout.

Masters Swimming not just for competitive swimmers

While some masters swimmers were previously competitive swimmers and swim in Masters meets, it is not required.  Only about 30% of Masters swimmers compete in meets.  There is room in Masters for every swimmer, competitive minded or not.  The teams are made up of a variety of swimmers including triathletes, open water swimmers, fitness swimmers, and competitive pool swimmers.  There is something for everyone and meets are additional, not required.  The coaching, friendships, are comradery are well worth it.

Where to find a local masters swimming team?

If I've convinced you that joining a masters swimming team is right for you, then please look at the US Masters Swimming website for a local club to join.

Great hub! I completely agree with all your points! Some masters teams also let you try them out and offer the first four practices (or something similar) for free.

I love swimming on my Masters team! I tried swimming at my gym, but the pool wasn't exactly made for swimmers; they had to find a happy medium for swimmers and water walkers. With my masters team I'm swimming in swimmer-happy (re: with flags) pools. Plus, the workouts I write for myself aren't are good as the ones the coaches write.
